There are many different options available when it comes to hair loss treatments. So many, in fact, that it may become a little confusing.
PRP therapy is one of Dr. Melamed’s most popular services due to its innovative nature, minimal chance of complications, and ease of treatment. When used in conjunction with ongoing laser sessions, topical and oral medications, PRP can provide patients with very impressive results.
What is PRP?
PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. Plasma is the fluid portion of your blood. Platelets are microscopic disc-shaped cells that are responsible for healing, repair and clotting when the skin is damaged or broken. Within platelets we have growth factors and natural stimulants that promote tissue healing and growth.
What does it do?
PRP stimulates several types of growth factor production:
- Epidermal Growth Factor – stimulate cell regrowth, keratinocyte and fibroblast production.
- Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor – helps the growth of blood vessels.
- Platelet-Derived Growth Factor – promotes collagen growth.
- Keratinocyte Growth Factor – optimizes healing and generates new skin.
- Transforming Growth Factor – promotes growth of new blood vessels.
- Fibroblast Growth Factor – promotes tissue repair.
- Collagen Stimulating Growth Factor – builds healthy tissues and blood cells
- Plus, many more fundamental processes behind this patented and coveted treatment.
What is the treatment process?
The process of treating hair loss or thinning with PRP is both innovative and exceptionally safe.
First, Dr. Melamed will take you through a detailed consultation, to assess your needs and expectations from the treatment. Next, a small amount of blood will be taken – similar to a standard blood test. This small sample is then spun in a medical centrifuge in order to separate out the platelets from the red and white blood cells. This process is the most critical step that determines the quality and quantity of the PRP end-product.
Your own platelet-rich-plasma is prepared for injection using an FDA approved process. The PRP is then injection into the scalp using a very small needle that causes minimal discomfort (numbing options are available). After the injections the scalp may feel a little sore or slightly swollen. This is totally normal and it is worth remembering that due to the fact that the PRP was sourced from your own body – there is no chance of intolerance or allergy from this natural treatment.
You may resume normal activities by the following day, though it is advised that the area is left alone for the first 24-48 hours. You’ll begin to notice hair stimulation within 90 days of your first treatment. Used in conjunction with laser hair therapy and medications, the results from PRP are quick and impressive. PRP utilizes leading-edge technology and Dr. Melamed is able to derive a high concentration of tissue for a variety of treatments.
