Stem cells are often perceived as a controversial medical treatment. However, with our coveted Mesenchymal Stem Cell treatment, we can either use your own adult cells or donor cells for treatment. All stem cell treatments are experimental and undergoing continuous testing.
Stem cell therapy in combined with PRP therapy and laser therapy aftercare, is an effective and powerful procedure to stimulate new hair growth, increase volume, and to prevent additional hair loss.
What are stem cells?
The stem cells used in hair loss treatments can be from two different sources. Mesenchymal stem cells can be extracted from your own body’s fat during a 2 hour in-office procedure. Adult stem cells already reside within your body, in fat cells and other areas. Compared with traditional bone marrow stem cell extraction, our process is not painful and produces a high number of stem cells. Through advances in medical research and scientific technology, we are able to separate these incredibly useful cells from body fat.
A small quantity of fat is removed from your lower back or buttocks – it is then quickly processed to remove impurities and preserve your stem cells.
Alternatively stem cells can be collected from the Warton’s jelly in the umbilical cord. The latter is derived from carefully screened mom’s after giving birth, and made available to patients after extensive preparation and testing. Both sources have the capability to replace dying cells and regenerate damaged tissue.
How can they treat hair loss?
As previously mentioned, Mesenchymal Stem Cells are able to help repair dying or damaged cells. They can differentiate into a wide variety of cells and stimulate tissue regeneration. By using these stem cells, we are able to repair the redundant hair follicles on your scalp and return them to a healthier functioning level.
Can everyone have Stem Cell treatment?
Only a certain number of medical problems are currently being treated with stem cells. In the case of treating hair loss with stem cells, some more severe cases of hair loss may not be treatable to a great extent. In the case of very severe hair loss, there are other treatments that may be more appropriate.
What to expect with stem cell treatment?
As with all West LA Hair restoration treatments, the first process is a detailed and in depth consultation with Dr. Melamed. The harvesting portion of the procedure involves local anesthesia and the removal (liposuction) of 50 cc of fat from your abdomen or flank. Dr. Melamed will endeavor to make this procedure as comfortable as possible for you – local anesthetic is used to numb the area before any fat is removed.
The fat cells will then be specially processed in order to harvest the mesenchymal stem cells. As with our PRP treatments, a small amount of blood will be taken in order to prepare PRP that is combined with your stem cells. These two powerful cells, when combined, produce the maximum effect.
The combination or PRP and stem cells is then injected into the scalp, paying particular attention to the areas of thinning or balding. The entire injection process takes approximately 30 minutes and you are able to return to your normal activities straight away. Most patients will require only one treatment, however, in some cases a 3 month follow-up may be necessary. Progressive types of hair loss may also require treatments with oral medications such as finasteride and laser biostimulation.
A course of suggested aftercare will be suggested. It is advised to follow these suggestions as it may affect the efficacy of your treatment.
